Today I was giving a presentation is school. Part of the criteria was to have audience participation. To achieve this I incorporated some questions at the end of my presentation. Initially, when the first question was asked no one had any desire to answer. Then my simply stating, “If you answer you get candy!” everyone started shouting out answers. The average age of everyone in my class is around 20-25, ironically not the first age group that comes to mind when you think of candy, but who doesn’t love candy?

As a punishment to many prisoners in the U.S. they are given Nutraloaf. Nutraloaf has several varying recipes, but it usually includes potato flakes, imitation cheese, beans, ground beef, cubed bread, and other foods. Since some prisoners like to stab the inmates or guards with the forks or spoons they are given, these prisoners are served Nutraloaf because eating it does not require utensils.
Currently inmates in Vermont are suing because they feel it is unfair to offer food as a punishment. Vermont law does not allow for a change in diet to be used as punishment for bad behavior. The Vermont Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case March 24, 2008. This is only one of the most recent lawsuits brought up by prisoners protesting the use of Nutraloaf as punishment. As a form of protest, several of these prisoners being fed this bread have assaulted guards and thrown their feces at them. Several states have banned the practice, while others require the guards to follow a set of disciplinary procedures before Nutraloaf is given.
